IN SOLIDARITY WITH OUR COMRADE ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS,

 

MEMBER AND RESIDENT OF THE COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA,

 

WHO IS IN HUNGER STRIKE UNTIL DEATH IN DEFENSE OF LIVE

 

 

 

In response to the imminent threat of attacks and eviction, we express our solidarity with the Community of Squatted Prosfygika in Athens and our support for its defense.

 

In times of global war and increasing repression against societies all over the world, Prosfygika found and created a piece of truth; that community, commitment and collectivization are the foundation of everything that we can build against the destructive forces of capitalist modernity. It is a place where the struggle for communal life and emancipation has been fought in recent years, and wholeheartedly- out of a deep, true, and determined dedication. Out of a commitment to seek and find ways of living collectively, outside of the capitalist and oppressive framework that governments offer.

 

 

 

For 16 years, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika has existed as a unique self-administered and

 

liberated neighborhood in Europe. In its 8 building blocks in the heart of Athens, 400 inhabitants from 27 different countries, speaking 20 different languages, with different religions, ideologies, ages, and backgrounds, not only live but struggle and organize together. It is a politically united neighborhood with a large number of occupied apartments and communal structures responding to the needs of its residents and beyond. At the same time, it not only answers the needs of a limited number of people but creates a practical proposal for the whole society. In the past years, over 22 structures based on the needs of the people have been built up, for example an autonomous womens structure, a bakery, and a health structure.

 

 

 

The state is currently preparing a major attack and the eviction of the community. In summer 2025, the local government secretly initiated a contract for the plan of eviction and renovation of four buildings of the community, driving forward the gentrification of the area; the eviction supposedly starting in July 2026. These plans are based on hypocrisy and cheap lies: the state claims to upgrade the area, with false hopes for "social housing" and hosting for patients and relatives of the adjacent cancer hospital "Agios Savvas".

 

 

 

The reality is that the community is already providing a much bigger and holistic form of "social housing", which is actually based on the collective self-determination of its members. For years, this community has also been hosting patients and their relatives from the cancer hospital and has even created a hosting structure for them – in cooperation with the workers' union of Agios Savvas.

 

 

 

Meanwhile, thousands of apartments in the area and the whole of Athens, often in the property of the Municipality or the church, remain unused and are left to decay. The same state that wants to throw even more people onto the streets will not address social problems; the community, however, has already been responding for 16 years.

 

 

 

Over the last decade, this is the fourth time that the state and the government have attempted to evict and plunder Prosfygika. This time appears to be the most serious and is about to be implemented immediately.

 

 

 

This time, too, the state will remain unsuccessful!

 

Aristotelis Chantzis, a member and resident of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, has started a hunger strike to the point of death on February 5, 2026, as a means of collective struggle for the

 

preservation and defense of Prosfygika.

 

 

 

The demands of this hunger strike are:

 

 

 

• Immediate cancellation of the contract by the region of Attica (local government)

 

 

 

•All residents of Prosfygika to remain in their homes, in the place and area where they live and have established social, cultural, and organical ties.

 

 

 

•Concrete guarantees for the restoration of Prosfygika to be given to the recently constituted non profit legal entity "Residents and Friends of Prosfygika L. Alexandras" with its own self-financing! – no public funds for the “redevelopment” of Prosfygika!

 

 

 

With his initiative, our comrade Aristotelis symbolizes the whole meaning of the fight for Prosfygika.

 

 

 

Prosfygika means surviving, resisting, living. An eviction of the community means death.

 

We support the defense of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika because we see this squatted

 

neighborhood as a glimpse of hope, a vibrant flame of resistance and communality in the heart of the metropolis of Athens. In the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, comradeship, communal property, solidarity, mutual aid, and horizontality are not just empty words but a lived practice in everyday reality.

 

It is not an abstract struggle, but one that is fought in every single moment.

 

 

 

Prosfygika is a striking example of a place, where the universal struggle for justice, dignity and self-

 

determination has materialized. As internationalists, we understand the importance and necessity of such grounds, wether we travel to physically join the struggle or find inspiration and strength in knowing the collective heartbeat of resistance is alive. It is our revolutionary duty to create and defend communities against the violence of state and capital whereever we are. Be it in Prosfygika, in Rojava, in Palestine, in Chiapas, such struggles can teach us how to survive communally.

 

 

 

Remembering our history shows us, that the power of the state has made it increasingly difficult to

 

liberate grounds, be it physically or ideologically. The downfall of the squatting movement in Europe, the repression against revolutionary organizations worldwide, every lense that we view through shows that we are attacked in a very existential way. We will not submit to their violence. We will not let nation state borders, threats or false promises limit our solidarity. As people from below we are united in our struggles and we will win!

 

 

 

The community of Squatted Prosfygika has decided to defend it’s social proposal, it’s people, it’s

 

structures, and it’s historical memory to the end. It is willing to defend itself on all levels – and thus to fight for its own existence and liberation.

 

 

 

In this mentality we call on all internationalists to participate and support in the defense of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

 

There are countless ways to participate in and to support this defense:‘
By signing and spreading this statement, as well as other statements of Prosfygika and of the internationalist #saveprosfygika campaign, by coming to Athens, or through expressions of solidarity or financial support.

 

 

 

Spread expressions of solidarity, such as statements, articles, solidarity pictures, etc.

 

• Support financially! Donate to the Firefund campaign

• Come to Athens, visit and help in the restoration and the defense of the community. The community is always in need of internationalist guests to participate in the different works. Currently there is a call for solidarity and support in the renovation of the wooden elements in the neighborhood such as windows and doors ( https://saveprosfygika.gr/index.php/en/materials/ ).

Warum wir als Internationalist*innen die Verteidigung der Gemeinschaft des

Besetzten Prosfygika unterstützen

Kollektive Erklärung von 74 Kollektiven und Organisationen

 

IN SOLIDARITÄT MIT UNSEREM GENOSSEN ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS,

MITGLIED UND BEWOHNER DER GEMEINSCHAFT DES BESETZTEN PROSFYGIKA, DER SICH SEIT DEM 5. FEBRUAR 2026 IN

EINEN HUNGERSTREIK BIS ZUM TOD BEFINDET, UM DAS LEBEN ZU VERTEIDIGEN

 

Als Reaktion auf die drohenden Angriffe und Zwangsräumung, drücken wir unsere Solidarität mit der Gemeinschaft der Besetzten Prosfygika in Athen aus und unterstützen ihre Verteidigung.
In Zeiten globaler Kriege und zunehmender Repression gegen Gesellschaften auf der ganzen Welt hat Prosfygika ein Stück Wahrheit gefunden und erschaffen; Diese Gemeinschaft, ihr Engagement und ihre Kollektivierung sind die Grundlage für alles, was wir gegen die zerstörerischen Kräfte der kapitalistischen Moderne aufbauen können. Es ist ein Ort, an dem in den letzten Jahren der Kampf für gemeinschaftliches Leben und Emanzipation geführt wurde, und zwar von ganzem Herzen – aus einer tiefen, echten und entschlossenen Hingabe. Aus dem Engagement heraus, Wege des kollektiven Lebens zu suchen und zu finden, außerhalb des kapitalistischen und unterdrückerischen Rahmens, den die Regierungen bieten.

 

Seit 16 Jahren existiert die Gemeinschaft der Besetzten Prosfygika als einzigartiges selbstverwaltetes und befreites Viertel in Europa. In ihren 8 Häuserblocks im Herzen Athens leben 400 Bewohnende aus 27 verschiedenen Ländern, sprechen 20 verschiedene Sprachen, haben unterschiedliche Religionen, Ideologien, Altersgruppen und Herkunft, aber sie leben nicht nur hier, sondern kämpfen und organisieren sich gemeinsam. Es ist ein politisch vereintes Viertel mit einer Vielzahl besetzter Wohnungen und gemeinschaftlicher Strukturen, die den Bedürfnissen ihrer Bewohnenden und darüber hinaus entsprechen. Gleichzeitig beantwortet es nicht nur die Bedürfnisse einer begrenzten Anzahl von Menschen, sondern schafft einen praktischen Vorschlag für die gesamte Gesellschaft. In den vergangenen Jahren wurden über 22 Strukturen aufgebaut, die auf den Bedürfnissen der Menschen basieren, wie zum Beispiel eine autonome Frauenstruktur, eine Bäckerei und eine Gesundheitsstruktur.

 

Der Staat bereitet derzeit einen großen Angriff vor und will die Gemeinschaft räumen. Im Sommer 2025 hat die lokale Regierung heimlich einen Vertrag zur Räumung und Renovierung von vier Gebäuden der Gemeinschaft eingeleitet, um die Gentrifizierung des Gebiets voranzutreiben. Die Zwangsräumung soll angeblich im Juli 2026 beginnen. Diese Pläne basieren auf Heuchelei und billigen Lügen: Der Staat behauptet, das Gebiet aufzuwerten, mit falschen Hoffnungen auf „Sozialwohnungen“ und der Unterbringung von Patienten und deren Angehörigen des benachbarten Krebskrankenhauses „Agios Savvas“.

 

Die Realität ist, dass die Gemeinschaft bereits eine viel größere und ganzheitlichere Form von „Sozialwohnungen“ bietet, die tatsächlich auf der kollektiven Selbstbestimmung ihrer Mitglieder beruht. Seit Jahren beherbergt diese Gemeinschaft auch Patienten und deren Angehörige des Krebskrankenhauses und hat sogar eine Unterbringungsstruktur für sie geschaffen – in Zusammenarbeit mit der Gewerkschaft der Arbeiter:innen des Agios Savvas.

 

Unterdessen bleiben Tausende von Wohnungen im Gebiet und in ganz Athen, oft im Besitz der Stadt oder der Kirche, ungenutzt und verfallen. Der gleiche Staat, der noch mehr Menschen auf die Straße werfen will, wird nicht auf soziale Probleme antworten; die Gemeinschaft reagiert jedoch seit 16 Jahren darauf.

 

In den letzten zehn Jahren ist dies bereits das vierte Mal, dass der Staat und die Regierung versuchen, Prosfygika zu räumen und plündern. Diesmal scheint es der ernsthafteste Versuch zu sein, und er soll unmittelbar umgesetzt werden.

 

Auch diesmal wird der Staat erfolglos bleiben!

 

Aristotelis Chantzis, ein Mitglied und Bewohner der Gemeinschaft der Besetzten Prosfygika, hat am 5. Februar 2026 einen Hungerstreik bis zum Tod begonnen, als Mittel des kollektiven Kampfes zur Erhaltung und Verteidigung von Prosfygika.

 

Die Forderungen dieses Hungerstreiks sind:

 

• Sofortige Stornierung des Vertrages durch die Region Attika (lokale Regierung)
• Alle Bewohner von Prosfygika sollen in ihren Häusern bleiben, an dem Ort und in dem Gebiet, in dem sie leben und soziale, kulturelle und organische Bindungen aufgebaut haben.
• Konkrete Garantien für die Wiederherstellung von Prosfygika sollen der neu gegründeten gemeinnützigen Organisation „Bewohner:innen und Freund:innen von Prosfygika L. Alexandras“ gegeben werden – keine öffentlichen Gelder für die „Neuentwicklung“ von Prosfygika!

 

Mit seiner Initiative symbolisiert unser Genosse Aristotelis die ganze Bedeutung des Kampfes um Prosfygika.

 

Prosfygika bedeutet überleben, Widerstand leisten, erblühen. Eine Räumung der Gemeinschaft bedeutet den Tod.
Wir unterstützen die Verteidigung der Gemeinschaft der Besetzten Prosfygika, weil wir dieses besetzte Viertel als einen Hoffnungsschimmer sehen, als eine lebendige Flamme des Widerstands und der Gemeinschaft im Herzen der Metropole Athen. In der Gemeinschaft der Besetzten Prosfygika sind Genoss*innenschaftlichkeit, gemeinschaftliches Eigentum, Solidarität, gegenseitige Hilfe und Horizontalität keine leeren Worte, sondern gelebte Praxis in der alltäglichen Realität.
Es ist kein abstrakter Kampf, sondern ein Kampf, der in jedem einzelnen Moment geführt wird.

 

Prosfygika ist ein herausragendes Beispiel für einen Ort, an dem der universelle Kampf für Gerechtigkeit, Würde und Selbstbestimmung materialisiert wurde. Als Internationalist:innen verstehen wir die Bedeutung und Notwendigkeit solcher Orte, sei es, dass wir uns physisch am Kampf beteiligen oder dass wir in dem Wissen, dass der kollektive Herzschlag des Widerstands am Leben ist, Inspiration und Kraft finden. Es ist unsere revolutionäre Pflicht, Gemeinschaften gegen die Gewalt von Staat und Kapital zu schaffen und zu verteidigen, wo immer wir sind. Sei es in Prosfygika, in Rojava, in Palästina, in Chiapas – solche Kämpfe können uns lehren, wie wir kollektiv überleben können.

 

Die Erinnerung an unsere Geschichte zeigt uns, dass die Macht des Staates es zunehmend schwierig macht, Orte zu befreien, sei es physisch oder ideologisch. Der Niedergang der Hausbesetzungen in Europa, die Repression gegen revolutionäre Organisationen weltweit – jeder Blickwinkel zeigt uns, dass wir auf eine sehr existenzielle Weise angegriffen werden. Wir werden uns ihrer Gewalt nicht unterwerfen. Wir werden uns nicht von Nationalstaaten, Drohungen oder falschen Versprechen in unserer Solidarität einschränken lassen. Als Menschen von unten sind wir in unseren Kämpfen vereint, und wir werden siegen!

 

Die Gemeinschaft der Besetzten Prosfygika hat beschlossen, ihr soziales Programm, ihre Menschen, ihre Strukturen und ihre historische Erinnerung bis zum Ende zu verteidigen. Sie ist bereit, sich auf allen Ebenen zu verteidigen – und somit für ihre eigene Existenz und Befreiung zu kämpfen.

 

In diesem Geist rufen wir alle Internationalist:innen auf, an der Verteidigung der Gemeinschaft der Besetzten Prosfygika teilzunehmen und diese zu unterstützen.
Es gibt zahllose Möglichkeiten, an dieser Verteidigung teilzunehmen und sie zu unterstützen:
• Unterzeichnet und verbreitet diese Erklärung sowie andere Erklärungen von Prosfygika und der internationalen #saveprosfygika-Kampagne
• Verbreitet Solidaritätsbekundungen, wie Erklärungen, Artikel, Solidaritätsbilder usw.
• Unterstützt finanziell! Spendet an die Firefund-Kampagne
(https://www.firefund.net/saveprosfygika) oder organisiert ein Solidaritätsevent.
• Kommt nach Athen, besucht und helft bei der Renovierung und Verteidigung der Gemeinschaft. Die Gemeinschaft braucht immer internationalistische Gäste, die an den verschiedenen Arbeiten teilnehmen. Derzeit gibt es einen Aufruf zur Solidarität und Unterstützung bei der Renovierung der Holzelemente im Viertel wie Fenster und Türen (https://saveprosfygika.gr/index.php/en/materials/).

Wir können nicht warten, wir werden uns nicht den Plänen der faschistischen und kapitalistischen Staaten beugen; die Hoffnung auf ein besseres Leben wird hier und jetzt gebaut und verteidigt.
