Abstract:
167 billion Euros for long range missiles, weapons systems and a beefed up military1. That's what the right-of-centre Australian government thinks our society needs right now. With millions of people struggling to make ends meet as we face a brutal unemployment crisis and unprecedented economic turmoil, this is a reprehensible decision. We can't let it go unchallenged.The Morrison Government needs to get their priorities straight – fast. Can you add your name to this urgent petition demanding they prioritise crucial spending on people's wellbeing instead of spending 270 billion Australian dollars on weapons and destruction?

We are at a crossroads. After a season of horrific bushfires and a global pandemic that has left 1.7 million people without paid work – we need the government to make the right choices.2

If Prime Minister Morrison could demonstrate the leadership needed to prioritise the community above multi-billion dollar weapons systems, we could have

    • A social safety net that covers everyone regardless of visas status meaning nobody is forced to live in poverty, and a dignified, well paid job is available to anyone who wants to work,

    • Universal access to to free education and training for everyone, including free childcare, TAFE and university,

    • Full Implementation of all recommendations to stop deaths in custody and end incarceration of First Nations people within 10 years,

    • Massive public investment in clean energy to transition our economy away from fossil fuels.

    • Life-saving upgrades to our healthcare system including critical health and hospital infrastructure for regional and remote communities, and;

  • An end the housing crisis for First Nations communities, achieving parity with non-Indigenous public housing within 10 years

It is unacceptable that our government is choosing to prioritise increased militarisation instead of investing in the things that would change all of our lives for the better.

More than 700,000 children live in poverty. More than 100,000 of us are homeless.3 Over a million people living and working in this country on temporary visas have been blocked from income support through a pandemic.

Bushfire survivors around the country are still living in tents and caravans because of inadequate government support.

Even if we weren't in the grips of a global recession and climate crisis, not a single cent more should be committed to weapons of war.

Giving the military billions at this moment in history is a decision we simply cannot let go unchallenged.

It is up to us. We need to hold our political leaders to account, starting with an urgent, thousands-strong petition to show them the public will not let this go unanswered.

Yours in solidarity,
