Due to the isolation of Europe, thousands of refugees are currently staying in the Bosnian border region around Bihac under undignified conditions. Last week, four fascist exponents from Germany toured the region.

  • Gunnar Lindemann is an AfD member of parliament from Berlin. He tweeted „Bihac is being left alone with the illegal migrants. The next wave of asylum seekers in Germany is already standing at the EU border. And Merkel, Berlin is asleep.“
  • Andreas Wild was an AfD member of parliament. He proposes an inhumane way of dealing with people on the move. In February 2021 he was expelled from the AfD because he is too fascist for certain people in the party and has connections to neo-Nazi organizations.
  • Aaron Kimmig is also a member of the AfD, as well as its youth organization, the Junge Alternative. He also maintains contacts with the Identitarian movement and is part of the Christian nationalist fraternity Saxo-Silesia in Freiburg.
  • The fourth person is Dejan Senic. This person wanted to become a member of the AfD several times, which was apparently denied to him due to his alleged leftist past. Senic speaks Croatian.

All four men are known for their islamophobic, racist attitudes as well as for their agitating politics against refugees. One goal of the trip was to engage in propaganda. On social media, in addition to tweets, they also published numerous photos and two longer YouTube videos in which they interview refugees and show their visit to the Lipa camp, which is actually closed to solidarity structures. In addition to propaganda, their trip was also about networking. Despite criticism from the Bosnian government, Mustafa Ruznic, the Prime Minister of the Una-Sana Canton, did not miss the opportunity to officially receive the delegation from Germany. Similar meetings took place with the Mayor of Bihac and Novi Grad. Such meetings would not take place if refugees were not considered a problem or even a threat by both sides. Both sides seem to want to benefit from the meeting for their respective policies.

Besides the still strong solidarity of many, there are also parliamentary and extra-parliamentary forces in the region that reject refugees and solidarity structures. On the one hand, the canton of Una-Sana continuously criminalizes the presence of refugees in public space and solidarity with them. Local politicians already mobilized for street blockades when the Lipa camp burned in December 20 and people on the move were to be transported to a new camp. On the other hand, there are more reports of racist violence and local militant structures against refugees. At least once there was a shooting. People and structures showing solidarity are also increasingly put under pressure.

What can be at stake in the face of such visits was shown last year in Greece. There, after protests by refugees and a fire in the Hotspot camp Moria, there were hunts lasting several days against refugees and solidarity structures. This required the interaction of organized fascist circles and the spontaneous mobilization of an unsolidaristic part of the population, which was ready to use brutal violence.

In Bosnia and in general, there is an urgent need for solidarity and struggle from all those who stand up against fascism and for global freedom of movement.
