Abstract:
The [right-of-centre Australian prime minister] Malcolm Turnbull has been trying to impose a national energy plan that will crush Australia's clean energy industry while letting dirty energy giants keep spewing pollution and ripping off their customers. But GetUp members weren't about to let PM Turnbull's National Energy Guarantee (NEG) lock us into another decade of rising climate pollution without a fight. While the debate over the NEG rages on, let's take a look back at how GetUp members have stopped the worst of Turnbull's NEGative energy plan from becoming a reality so far. o 18,943 emails to key decision makers o 3 big rallies o 681 phone calls o 1 game changing TV ad (Click the headline for the complete text.)

Your pressure is working. Key states have refused to support Turnbull's dirty energy plan in its current form. Victoria, Queensland and ACT [Canberra] have told Malcolm Turnbull that they'll only be signing on to the NEG if the policy is changed to allow future governments to build more clean energy.

It's not everything you've been asking for — the states have stopped short of saying the NEG's pathetic targets must be increased before they'll pass it. But their demand reflects one of the key concerns GetUp members have raised with their Energy Ministers — that Turnbull's dangerously anti-renewable targets will be locked in for an entire decade.

And it wasn't just State Premiers and Energy Ministers who heard our message. 3,461 GetUp members chipped in to take the truth about the NEG straight into the homes of everyday Australians when we joined forces with our friends from Greenpeace on a sassy, attention-grabbing TV ad.

And the media noticed too…

We took our passion for climate action on to the streets with big rallies and imaginative stunts that made night-time news across the major commercial networks.

Malcolm Turnbull is now desperately trying to shore up support for the NEG within his own party room. Despite all the damage the NEG is already set to do to our renewable industry, climate deniers like Tony Abbott [who preceded Turnbull as prime minister] and [backbench conservative MP] Craig Kelly still aren't happy, and are threatening to vote the NEG down unless it comes with subsidies for new coal.

So far, it's looking like Malcolm Turnbull will refuse to meet the states' modest request to pave the way for a future government to turn the NEG into a policy that could do at least some good for clean energy. He's refusing to lift the NEG's pathetic climate targets. And he's showing every sign of caving in to Tony Abbott's demand for a fresh round of coal subsidies.

All eyes are now on the Senate, who'll need to step up and protect our climate and our booming renewable sector from being gutted by this disastrous plan. And the states who've taken a stand so far are already under enormous pressure to back down. It's going to take everything we've got to win the climate-safe future our kids and grandkids deserve. But you should be so proud of the impact you've had on the NEG debate so far. Together we have sent a clear message to key decision makers: reject the NEG until it delivers on climate and clean energy.

Thank you for taking action for the 84% of people in this country who want a future powered by the sun and the wind, not climate-wrecking coal.

In determination,
Miriam and Adam, for the GetUp Team
