Stadt/Region:

4th of YOU LIE: Der 4.

We welcome the protest against racist police violence in the United States, as well as here and in other countries. On Saturday, the 4th of July 2020, we will take a stand for the freedom of those who have begun this struggle more than fifty years ago. Already in 1967, the Black Panther Party organized self-protection against racist police brutality in many big cities in the U.S. by armed observation of the police, accompanied by cameras. The repression against the Panthers and many other organizations inspired by them was brutal. Many were murdered by the state and still more were thrown into jail for decades. Many of the Black Panthers are still in prison to this very day, among them Mumia Abu-Jamal, Jalil Abdul Muntaqim, Romaine “Chip” Fitzgerald, Sundiata Acoli, Ed Pointdexter, Veronza Bowers, Kamau Sadiki, Kenny Zulu Whitmore or indigenous activists such as Leonard Peltier of the American Indian Movement. They have all spent a large part of their lives incarcerated, and Mumia Abu-Jamal was even threatened by the death penalty and imprisoned in solitary confinement for almost thirty years.

But prison does not just affect the fighters of the Panthers. More than 2.2 million people are incarcerated in U.S. prisons, the majority of them People of Color. This kind of mass incarceration is the state’s response to the resistance of the Communities of Color and the social movements that has risen again and again in the U.S. Today’s prison industry is nothing but the continuation of historic slavery. For more than ten years, there have been massive struggles and strikes in the prisons in which tens of thousands of prisoners participated. Since 2016, they have only one nation-wide demand: the abolition of slavery! The justified anger caused by the deadly racist police violence makes clear that White Supremacy can and must be terminated. The freedom of the prisoners in the U.S. is one important part of this struggle.

Racial Profiling and discrimination are also part of daily life for People of Color in Germany, sometimes with deadly consequences. According to research by the campaign Death in Custody, at least 159 People of Color have been killed in custody in Germany by racist violence since 1990.

4th of YOU LIE: The 4th of July has been the national holiday of the U.S. since 1938. Since then the U.S. state institutions have been celebrating “the nation.” The ethnocide of the indigenous population and the abduction of millions of people to exploit them as slaves are hardly ever an official topic in all of this. The millions of poor in the U.S. who are – especially during the current Corona crisis – left to fend for themselves also mostly go unnoticed on this day. Who in the U.S. has anything to celebrate on this date? Join us and take to the street on the 4th of July:
