[B] Errichtung und Bedrohung einer Gedenkstätte für Kyriakos Xymitiris

Die anarchistischen Gefährt:innen Kyriakos, Marianna und Dimitra haben sich jahrelang an zahlreichen Kämpfen in Berlin beteiligt. Sie prägten Diskussionen, Aktionen und weitere Momente des Kampfes in der anarchistischen und Besetzunngsbewegung, nicht nur in der Stadt. Der Weg von Kyriakos, einschließlich des Vorfalls, der zum Tod unseres Gefährten führte, ist Teil einer konsequenten Verfolgung des Kampfes für eine freie und gerechte Welt.

Revolutionäres Gedenken ist wichtig, um dem Narrativ des Staates etwas entgegenzusetzen und das Andenken an die Gefallenen hochzuhalten. Wir werden die Gefallenen und die Kämpfe, die geführt wurden nicht vergessen. Sie haben unser aller Kämpfe geformt und werden dies auch in Zukunft tun.

Um einen kleinen Beitrag zur Bedeutung des Kampfes zu leisten, den Kyriakos geführt hat und um einen gemeinsamen, kollektiven Ort des Gedenkens in Berlin zu schaffen, haben wir einen kleinen Platz im Berliner Stadtteil Kreuzberg in Anspruch genommen, der als „Carlo-Giuliani-Park“ bekannt ist, direkt neben dem Bethanien liegt und bereits eine Gedenkstätte für den gefallenen Gefährten Carlo Giuliani ist, der beim G8-Gipfel 2001 in Genua/Italien von der Polizei erschossen wurde. Dieser Ort wurde somit zu einem offenen Platz für revolutionäres Gedenken. Hier errichten wir eine Gedenkstätte, die die gelb behandschuhte Hand [2] des Gefährten Kyriakos zeigt, neben einer Tafel mit den warmherzigen Worten der Gefährtin Marianna Manoura.

Menschen prägen die Orte und Orte prägen die Menschen und ein solches Monument ist ein Versuch, den Prozess, das Vergessen zu erzwingen, zu blockieren.

Der Ort soll jedem Menschen, der sich Kyriakos verbunden fühlt oder den Ideen, für die er kämpfte und starb, Raum zum Gedenken und zur Erinnerung bieten. In der Hoffnung, dass dieser Ort inspiriert, aber auch die Leere füllt, die der Verlust von Kyriakos in so vielen Herzen hinterlassen hat.

In der Stadt Berlin, insbesondere in einem Viertel wie dem, das wir für diesen Ort ausgewählt haben, sind der Kannibalismus des Kapitalismus und die Gentrifizierung offensichtlich. Reihenhäuser neben Lofts liegen in der Nähe historischer Orte der Bewegung in Berlin, wie dem Mariannenplatz. [3] Gerade in diesem konfliktreichen Viertel ist es notwendig, Raum zu schaffen, um an die Kämpfe und Auseinandersetzungen zu erinnern, die in der Stadt und darüber hinaus ausgetragen wurden, sowie an die Momente und Personen, die den Weg der revolutionären Perspektive stets inspiriert haben.

Drohung durch das Bezirksamt

Das Straßen- und Grünflächenamt droht seit den ersten Tagen der Errichtung damit, den Gedenkort abzureißen. In einem Schreiben, das schon an sich eine Beleidigung darstellt, erklären die Bürokrat:innen des Bezirks Friedrichshain/Kreuzberg die Gedenkstätte zu Baumaterial, das bis zum 21.08.2026 an einen anderen Ort verbracht werden muss. Ganz klar wollen sie den öffentlichen Raum kontrollieren, akzeptieren aber keine Selbstorganisation, insbesondere nicht die öffentliche Erinnerung an einen bewaffneten Kämpfer.

Der Carlo-Giuliani-Park ist nicht der einzige Ort in Kreuzberg, an dem Staat und Stadtverwaltung versuchen, die Kontrolle zu erlangen.

Vor allem Orte wie Parks müssen gemeinschaftlich genutzt werden können, also sollten auch die Menschen, die sie nutzen, diese Orte formen.

Wir werden die Bedeutung des Weges verteidigen, den Kyriakos gewählt hat, ebenso wie den Kampf, den er gemeinsam mit vielen anderen in dieser Stadt und darüber hinaus geführt hat. Ein Ort des Gedenkens, der Erinnerung, der Trauer, der Begegnung und des Zusammenkommens muss immer verteidigt werden.

Während wir Seite an Seite mit unseren Gefährtinnen Marianna und Dimitra gegen staatliche Repression und jegliche Angriffen kämpfen, werden wir Antworten finden, sollte die Stadtverwaltung nicht nur die Gedenkstätte abreißen wollen, sondern auch versuchen, unsere Überzeugungen auf die Probe zu stellen.

[1]: Als Folge der Explosion, bei der Kyriakos Xymitiris sein Leben verlor, wurde gegen Marianna Manoura, Dimitra Zarafeta und drei weitere Personen wegen Mitgliedschaft in einer terroristischen Vereinigung ermittelt. Nach knapp anderthalb Jahren Untersuchungshaft wurden im April 2026 die drei anderen Personen freigesprochen und Marianna und Dimitra zu hohen Haftstrafen verurteilt.

Building and Threats Against a Memorial for Kyriakos Xymitiris

On July 4, we dedicated a memorial to the fallen anarchist guerrilla fighter Kyriakos Xymitiris during a moving ceremony.

Kyriakos Xymitiris died in an explosion in Athens on October 31, 2024.

Following the incident, the usual repressive state spectacle unfolded, culminating in the convictions of Marianna Manoura and Dimitra Zarafeta. Marianna was sentenced to 19 years in prison, while Dimitra faces 8 years. [1]

The anarchist comrades Kyriakos, Marianna, and Dimitra participated in numerous struggles in Berlin for many years. They shaped discussions, actions, and other moments of struggle within the anarchist and squatter movements, not only in the city. Kyriakos’ journey, including the incident that led to the death of our comrade, is part of a consistent pursuit of the struggle for a free and just world.

Revolutionary remembrance is important to counter the state’s narrative and to honor the memory of those who have fallen. We will not forget those who have fallen or the struggles that have been fought. They have shaped all of our struggles and will continue to do so in the future.

To make a small contribution to the significance of the struggle that Kyriakos fought and to create a shared, collective space for remembrance in Berlin, we have claimed a small place in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district known as “Carlo Giuliani Park,” located right next to Bethanien and already serving as a memorial to our fallen comrade Carlo Giuliani, who was shot by police during the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa, Italy. This place has thus become an open space for revolutionary remembrance. Here we are building a memorial that shows the yellow-gloved hand [2] of comrade Kyriakos, next to a plaque bearing the heartfelt words of comrade Marianna Manoura.

People shape places, and places shape people; a monument like this is an attempt to block the process of forcing people to forget.

This place is intended to offer space for remembrance and reflection to anyone who feels connected to Kyriakos or to the ideas for which he fought and died. In the hope that this place will inspire, but also fill the emptiness that Kyriakos’ loss has left in so many hearts.

In the city of Berlin, especially in a neighborhood like the one we’ve chosen for this place, the cannibalism of capitalism and gentrification are evident. Row houses stand side by side with lofts near historic sites of the movement in Berlin, such as Mariannenplatz. [3] Precisely in this conflict-ridden neighborhood, it is necessary to create space to remember the struggles and confrontations that took place in the city and beyond, as well as the moments and people who have always inspired the path of the revolutionary perspective.

Threat from the District Office

Since the very first days of its construction, the Street and Green Space Office has been threatening to tear down the memorial site. In a letter that is in itself an insult, the bureaucrats of the Friedrichshain/Kreuzberg district declare the memorial to be construction material that must be moved until 08/21/26 to another location. Clearly, they want to control public space but do not accept self-organization—especially not the public commemoration of an armed fighter.

Carlo Giuliani Park is not the only place in Kreuzberg where the state and city administration are trying to gain control.

Above all, places like parks must be open for communal use, which means that the people who use them should also be the ones to shape these spaces.

We will defend the significance of the path Kyriakos chose, as well as the struggle he waged alongside many others in this city and beyond. A place of remembrance, memory, mourning, encounter, and gathering must always be defended.

As we fight side by side with our comrades Marianna and Dimitra against state repression and all forms of attack, we will find ways to respond should the city administration not only seek to tear down the memorial but also attempt to test our beliefs.

[1]: Following the explosion in which Kyriakos Xymitiris lost his life, Marianna Manoura, Dimitra Zarafeta, and three other individuals were investigated for membership in a terrorist organization. After nearly a year and a half in pretrial detention, the three other individuals were acquitted in April 2026, while Marianna and Dimitra were sentenced to lengthy prison terms.
