Demonstration “End the Exploitation of Prisoners!” in Front Tegel Prison

Imprisonment exists to punish resistant and non-conformist attitudes. Prisons manifest themselves as the places of extermination to break the spirit of prisoners and exploit their bodies. Prisoners suffer malnutrition, psychological and physical violence, medical neglect and even death.

The imprisonment of our comrades in Korydallos prison in Athens, Marianna M. and Dimitra Z. is a confirmation of the previous point. Only a few days after Mariana M. survived the explosion that cost the life of our eternal comrade Kyriakos Xymitiris, she was taken to the women’s wing of Korydallos, which offers no possibility of examination, let alone treatment.

The poor nutrition and unsanitary conditions in prison which influence our comrades, affect the entire prison population. It is not only the psyche of the inmates and their relatives that is to be damaged by prison, but the bodies are strategically to be weakened and destroyed in the long term. What we observe in Korydallos is also visible in German prisons and every other prison. In his recently published letter to the Berlin Senate of Justice, Andreas Krebs who is imprisoned in JVA Tegel, describes the administration of the wrong medication and the failure to provide emergency care. Since April 13, Andreas has been on hunger strike because of the deplorable conditions in JVA Tegel.

Further than the medical neglect, prison authorities uses every type of economical and social tool to disarm prisoners from their will; demands of the demonstration “End the Exploitation of Prisoners!” is an example of this exploitative character:

• No forced labor
• Freedom of association
• Minimum wage
• Pension insurance
• Inflation adjustment
• Increase in pocket money to at least 100-150 euros
• Meal allowances of at least 10 euros instead of rotten food

Even if our goals go beyond the stated demands, we still want to strengthen the calls from inside the prison, because we do not tolerate the isolation and exploitation that the prison walls impose on us.

Against the society of isolation, control, exploitation and oppression, which finds its most direct expression in prison. Community, freedom, solidarity!
