Why the Education is the answer?

Because of the impossible task law enforcement has in policing the problem the answer to the problem can only be education – for no sane human who really understands the consequences would engage in the type of destruction of themselves and others these drugs cause. It thus is necessary to understand their actual effects.

One community which was badly hit by the designer drug craze was Bangor, Maine. Ultimately, the response they devised which made a dent in the use of the new drugs was a massive, community-wide educational effort which involved persons in all walks of life – law enforcement, schools, medical personnel and other service oriented organizations.

Bangor’s struggle with the drugs is highlighted in a new educational film produced locally which was spurred by a local tragedy.

In January 2012 19-year-old Logan Matthew Kushner died in a Clearwater park – cause – designer drugs. Kushner had been smoking K-2, began acting psychotically, and then drowned himself in a creek.

In response, the Center for Public Safety Innovation (CPSI) and the Multijurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training (MCTFT) program at St. Petersburg College’s Allstate Center, in cooperation with Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America and the National Guard Bureau, created and released an hour-long training video called “Designer Drugs: The New Frontier.” (The video is available online.)
The Foundation for A Drug Free World is an education program for youth as well as adults on the harmful effects of illicit drugs. In regards to the new designer drug craze the Foundation points to its informational booklet on LSD and Ecstacy, the original synthetic drugs with similar effects similar to the more recent.
Here is an excerpt of the instructional booklet on LSD which is distributed by the Foundation:
“The effects of LSD are unpredictable. They depend on the amount taken, the person’s mood and personality, and the surroundings in which the drug is used. It is a roll of the dice—a racing, distorted high or a severe, paranoid low.”
“Taken in a large enough dose, LSD produces delusions and visual hallucinations. The user’s sense of time and self changes. Sizes and shapes of objects become distorted, as do movements, colors and sounds; even one’s sense of touch and the normal bodily sensations turn into something strange and bizarre. Sensations may seem to ‘cross over,’ giving the user the feeling of hearing colors and seeing sounds. These changes can be frightening and can cause panic.”
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is a nonprofit public benefit corporation that empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free. For more information go to www.drugfreeworld.org
