We the undersigned, individuals, civil society organizations, the Filipino community, migrants and antiracist organizations, hereby express our full support of the demands of the 12 Filipino seafarers and other members of the crew of MV AETEA SIERRA for the immediate payment of their unpaid wages from July 2009 until the present and their repatriation to the Philippines so that they can be reunited to their families.

They have suffered too long on board the ship MV AETEA SIERRA which is owned by AETEA Sierra Maritime Company, Thesarco Shipping Co S.A. and Argosy Shipmanagement. The cargo ship is anchored 6 nautical miles away from the port of Piraeus , which the sailors say is a “floating prison” from which they could not just get off because their documents are withheld by the shipping company and they need to get a shore pass from the Port Authorities.

They have fully served the 10-month work contracts, some of them have even served 14 months without the chance of going ashore.

They have been begging their employer to give their salaries because since July 2009, their families have been left without any financial support. Without money to pay for the school fees, their children have since stopped going to school. In order to survive, their families are forced to borrow money from loan sharks at very high interest.

The seafarers have described their situation more graphically: sometimes for days, they have no electricity because the ship-owner does not provide diesel fuel. Water and food always run out, and for days the water they drink is rusty.

The seafarers said that they could still stand the lack of food and drinking water. What they cannot stand is the loneliness and thought of their loved ones who have no money to buy food and their children who have stopped going to school to help find means to survive.

We believe that the sailors’ demands strike at the core of our being as theirs is a case of human beings fighting for their rights as workers being denied justice.

We are therefore appealing to your sensitivity and sense of solidarity and call all of you to support our demands for the immediate solution to the seafarer’s problems.

° "Unknown" persons (as the police authorities stated) looted the Jewish Synagoge in the old town of Chania on Kreta island early in the mourning of Tuesday and a part of the library got destroyed. The well known fascists of the island and friends of the police authorities become "unknown"!

_Letter from Christos Stratigopoulos, anarchist comrade_

Dear …

Greetings from Me and Alfredo who got your letter yesterday. Here things haven’t changed at all from the moment we arrived.

The main problem is still Alfredo’s very precarious health situation. Apart from all his health problems, which as you know he had before entering prison here in Greece, now the pain in his shoulder is coming back because of the tumour which, according to the diagnosis that they made in Italy, needed to be operated on. There can be no doubt that his general health situation has got worse from the moment he went back to prison. This fact is also due to the extremely bad conditions of detention that we are both coping with, particularly Alfredo because of his age.

Moreover, things here are very slow at the administrative level. For example, they took him to the local hospital twenty days ago to do X-rays of his shoulder and still they haven’t given him the necessary documentation from the hospital, which the lawyers need in order to present a new urgent request for his release. Today, they told us that at the most by the end of next week they would give us the medical certificates that the lawyers need.

For the time being all we can do is to patiently put up with this unpleasant situation.

I know that many comrades in Greece are aware of this situation and are interested to see what happens with Alfredo’s second application to the judges for release on medical grounds.

I don’t think that there is anything better to do, because the need for his release is becoming essential.
Nearly every day we get letters and postcards from many comrades in Greece but also from nearly all the rest of Europe. This fact comforts us a lot knowing that we are not alone to face this difficult situation, particularly Alfredo for the reasons explained above. We also got a postcard from England, from some comrades in Bristol.

The new application for release for Alfredo, with the new medical documentation that we are waiting for, should be made some time around Christmas. We are waiting to see.

I hope you are well, etc………

….

Alfredo sends his greetings, perhaps he will write to you but, among other things, he hasn’t been seeing well recently. But don’t worry, because I am looking after him.

A strong hug

Christos
