Ukraine: Neo-nazi became victim of his own aggression

Antifascistska diya 27.04.2009 23:49 Themen: Antifa Weltweit
Ukraine: On the 17th of April in Odessa 15 nazi-skinheads with the use of bottles and rocks attacked 5 members of the anti-fascist movement. Nazis ran up to the antifascists sitting on a bench near the “Orech” club and started shouting threads and Nazis slogans and started the fighting. Earlier activists of «antifa» were often threatened by Nazi-skinheads; anti-fascists were victims of nazi-attacks. Their fore they realized that any conflict provoked by Nazis could be fatal. Protecting their lives “antifa” had to use a pen-knife (means of self-protection not prohibited by the low) Nazi-skinhead Maksim Chaika –was wounded. He did not get proper medical aid and died. If the antifascists had not fighted back protecting themselves they would have been in morgue. Ultrarights tray to make benefit of the insolent by fouls presenting the facts and cynically lying to the publicity.
Ultrarights propagandists declair that killing had political subtext. Actually 5 antifa had to resist 15 aggressive nazi-skinhead attack. The police confirm the fixed number of antifashiscts. Nazis are truing to present Maksim Chaika as are victim however it was him , and his friends who started the fighting.

It is well known that Chaika himself and another Odessa Nazis often threatened antifa activists. Were collecting info even addresses and made attacks antifascists. Naturally Nazi can reject an unfavorable facts replacing them with their own falsification.

Mass-media also reproduce the myth that killed Maksim Chaika was an activist off are ‘’patriotic organization’’ it is well known that social organization ‘’Sich’’ is Nazi-skinhead organization who were make onslaughts on racism basics. Criminal reports from all Ukraine have more and more facts about killings on racism basics. People who perform disagreement wish antihuman ideology of Nazism take even bigger risk to fall victims of the street terror.
Bands of neo-Nazis do not keep in secret they are planning to revenge- we can see this info online: “We must do everything possible that the least of over blood to be shed and the most blood to be shed by the enemy. Our enemies should be killed first then our losses would be minimal”.

Meanwhile the ultrarights parties try to make political accets hypocritically mentioning the repressions of the “Ukrainian patriots”. It is worth mentioning that politicians of the opposite (pro-Russian party “Rodina” and politician Igor Markov) – are following the pragmatic aims. They preset the incident as a conflict of pro-Russian and Ukrainian right radicals. But Ukrainian “antifa” is not related to any political force. More than that a party promoting national superiority could provoke only negative feelings of antifa members.

The fact that antifa are presented as extremists is another myth that should be denied. Mass-media keep silent about extremist nature of neo-Nazism ideology that rejects value of human life. Mass-media forget about terrifying statistics of killing on basics of racism hatred. It is terrible that people who do not agree with Nazis can’t count on any protection of the authorities or society. We should add that reaction of the antifa- activists for aggression had legal foundation: part 3 paragraph 27 of the constitution of Ukraine provides the right of the individuals to protect their own lives and health and also lives and health of other individuals from the illegal actions; according to provision 36 of the Criminal Low of Ukraine the above motioned of the antifascists is consider as a necessary self-protection. The antifascists knew that the Nazis were more numerous and that they were armed with bottles and rocks so fighting was inevitable.

We – the activists of antifascist movement – express our sincere condolences to Maksim Chaika’s family and relatives. Those who make fools of young people with the neo-nazi ideology and trend to gain money, power and glory are really guilty of Maksim Chaika’s death.
We demand from Odessa police comprehensive investigation of the incident and the conformation of the fact of necessary self-protection on the part of antifa

We demand from all mass-media to resist all the provocations and to objectively present the event because the destinies of antifascists who are involved in this incident depends on this. More than this mass-media should oppose attends of definite political forces to cash on Maksim Chaika’s death.

Official statement by the Ukrainian President on April 22: the beginning of persecution of antifascists in Ukraine?”

On April 22 the president of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko made an official statement that there is «an extremist organisation “Antifa”» in Ukraine and demanded from SBU (Ukraine Security Service) - «to check all the information concerning coordination of its activity by the foreign anti-Ukrainian organizations». This is an exceptional incident: the president points out to the law enforcing services that there are extremists in Ukraine, names them, and insinuates who their real organizers and patrons are.

But where did the president get such information?

On April 17, in Odesa during the skirmish between ultra-rightists and antifascists one of the far rightists (Maksim Chaika) was injured and later died. In spite of the evidence that ultra-rightists attacked a smaller group of antifascists, who simply defended themselves, nobody - neither journalists, nor politicians - have used the term “self-defense”. Instead antifascists were labeled as “pro-Russia militants”, who consciously killed “an activist from a patriotic civic association” (the mass-media’s statement). The attack by one side and self-defense by the other have become an instrument of political PR for those who want to use this tragedy to score certain points or to eliminate opponents.

The president’s statement was the culmination of this. From his words we got to know about the organization “Antifa”, which is extremist and which, of course, is coordinated by hostile ‘foreign centers’. Nevertheless, “antifa” is not an organization but a network-movement; not Ukrainian or anti-Ukrainian but worldwide; and, of course, the president has not produced any proof. And what do we know about the other side of the skirmish?

The deceased Maksim Chaika was a leader of Odessa’s far rights, a member of the organization “SICH” (”Glory and Honour”) and a football fan of FC “Chornomorets”. Partly because of “Chornomorets” fans the city of Odessa periodically appears in human rights monitoring reports concerning racial or national hate crimes. We mean not only vandalism of the Jewish cemetery but also attacks with human victims. In the last few days many Internet-users have received access to photo and video materials confirming that the force which the attackers of April 17th belong to is not just “patriotic”. In particular we could see so called ‘roman’ (Nazi) salutes, Nazi symbols, stories about participating in “actions” against “foreigners”.

The “SICH” civic association, which Maksim Chaika belonged to, is a member of the so called ‘Social-nationalist assembly’ together with the odious “Patriot of Ukraine” association. Materials published both on the “Assembly” and “Patriot of Ukraine” web-sites leave no doubts in neo-fascist and paramilitary character of these organizations. But the president Yushchenko, in spite of the stated above, has decided to choose young antifascists as a target, relying on the invalid data from prejudiced politicians.

In the last few days it was repeatedly mentioned that inquiry has got a video record of the attack on April 17th. We are afraid that this record could be destroyed, in particular, because of political pressure - its content contradicts to the Nazi-attackers’ version of events. Not to let this happen, we publicly declare our concern and demand the record is kept safe.

We are receiving information about use of pressure on the witnesses by the law enforcement officials - both psychological and physical - as to only give testimonies corresponding to the attackers’ version.

Events in Odessa could highlight the fact that youth fascism in Ukraine has existed for a long time, as well as confrontation between activists of the far right and antifascist movements. Instead, we see politicized hysteria which only disgraces its participants.

We demand aninvestigation of the facts without any distortion, manipulation and pre-election persecution.
