Your signature might help to mitigate destruction of Third World people’s lives through our enslavement to the car – and do a bit for our own climate. The 27 European Union countries want 10% of their driving fuel to be made from crops. The German parliament is to vote on the proposal probably on the 23rd of this month. The activist group Rainforest Rescue is appealing for people to sign a letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel and parliamentary leaders to defeat the proposal to add agrofuel to petroleum-sourced petrol and diesel.
“Agrofuel is made from food crops such sugar cane, rape, soy or palm oil,” the organisation writes in its appeal (forgetting maize, wheat and other cereals in the US and Europe).

“Every kilometre a car is driven [with agrofuel] worsens hunger in the world, destruction of rain forest and climate heating. Rainforest Rescue therefore demands that no agrofuel be mixed in with petrol and diesel.”

If you think this has nothing to do with us, think again. Experts say a fifth of the greenhouse gases is caused by fire-clearing of jungles, mainly in Asia and South America. That's having a huge impact on our climate, no matter where you live.

In Asia Indonesia and Malaysia are among the world’s worst offenders on jungle destruction for oil palm plantations.
