Uranium, atomic waste and child cancer
Uranium enrichment, atomic waste and child cancer!
Just before Christmas the atomic industry, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and environment angel Gabriel are pulling out all the stops.* In Gronau** the first expansion phase of the nuclear enrichment plant is close to inauguration; it appears that in addition to the atomic waste from La Hague***, Ahaus**** is now destined also to store the reactor pressure container from Jülich***** ; and the demands of anti-nuclear activists in the Münsterland and the Ruhr region to have child cancer studies also done in Ahaus, Gronau and Hamm****** have already produced the first results: doctors in Ahaus and residents in Hamm report unanimously higher cancer incidence around atomic installations there!

The atomic industry is upping the pressure. URENCO had originally intended for the first cascades of the UAA-2 line to start working in October, but it now seems almost ready to go. The first step of the expansion from 1,800 to 4,500 tonnes output per year is becoming reality. It should really be a case for George Bush and the UN Security Council to take up since Pakistan, after all, used URENCO technology to build its atom bomb. But then URENCO just happens to be building a new uranium enrichment plant in the USA right now, so George Dbljuh doesn’t for once look quite so intently at what’s happening in Germany.
The pressure is also building up massively in Ahaus. Two weeks ago an article by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection was published that referred to the first waste transports from La Hague to Ahaus in 2008. The next day a correction to 2009-2011 was made, which isn’t any more calming, either. Nor has any permit been issued yet, for that will as usual be done up in the Office’s cellar in absolute secrecy and exclusion of the public. And once it’s there, in most cases the first transport is ready to roll.
The next hammer blow came today: The EWN, which transported the reactor pressure container from Rheinsberg to Greifswald under scandalous conditions at the end of October*******, announced on Deutschland-Radio that it would also be taking the reactor pressure container from Jülich to the “nearest interim” repository – which means Ahaus!
And on top of all that, the child cancer study! It’s actually been known for 20 years that atomic power causes illness and kills – it’s just that for a long time now no one wanted to hear it any more. The eternal droning-on about the climate-friendly energy and the red-green atomic pact******** have pushed the dangers into the background. Even now the Office for Radiation Protection and Minister Gabriel drone on routinely that the leukaemia cases are deplorable, but have nothing to do with radioactivity from atomic power stations. No? With what then? With the sandwich of the station watchman?
It’s simply up to us to again make clear to every last person that atomic power kills and is criminal – no more and no less.
That’s why surely it must be absolutely clear: Atomic installations have to be switched off immediately. But the atomic lobbyists in politics and business as always are trying to prevent that. That is why the only thing that will help is pressure from below. In Krümmel Robin Wood was at the gate three days ago, in Biblis********* legal action is in process and at Ahaus there will be a big Sunday stroll this Sunday at 2 p.m.
Ending atomic power needs hands-on work!

* The Federal Office for Radiation Protection is responsible to the German environment ministry, Sigmar Gabriel is the environment minister.
** Gronau is the location near Muenster of Germany’s only uranium enrichment plant, operated by the British-Dutch-German URENCO company.
*** La Hague is the location in France of a plutonium factory where spent German atomic fuel is processed and returned to Germany as waste.
**** Ahaus, also near Muenster, is the location of an atomic waste dump.
***** Jülich, between Cologne and Aachen, is the location of three experimental reactors, the last of which was shut down in May 2006.
