Protests in Hamburg, Germany in support of the Saffron Revolution

Outraged by the brutal crack down by the Burmese military regime against demonstrators lead by the 88 Generation Students and the Buddhist monks during September and October 2007 the Hamburg based Burmese community - Burma Action Group Hamburg - staged demonstration in front of the Chinese Consulate General on 2. October. The demonstration was joined by the Hamburg based Amnesty International. A letter of protest, issued by the BAG-Hamburg, against China's misuse of veto at the UNSC was dropped into the letter box of the Consulate General as they refused to accept it in person. One of the staffs informed the group through the Police that they were instructed by the higher authorities not to accept any protest letter.

Again on the 5. October, when the Amnesty International waged a protest march at down town Hamburg the Burma Action Group joined them. Speeches were given by Torsten Wilde of the AI, Salai Kipp Kho Lian of the BAG-Hamburg and Hans-Bernd Zöllner – a Burma watcher - to the public to arouse awareness about the plight of the Burmese monks and peoples suffering harsh reprisal by the military junta. The event drew the attention of a crowd of ca. 400 people when speeches were given at Gerhard Hachmann Platz.

On the 6. October - the world wide protest under the title - "A day of International Action for a Free Burma" the Burma Action Group Hamburg staged another demonstration organized by a newly formed group called Solidaritätskomitee Burma. The SKB is formed by some young cosmopolitans living in Hamburg. The Committee is committed to help the Burmese peoples in their struggle for freedom and democracy. The demo was waged at the down town of Hamburg and ended at the Jungfernstieg after giving speeches announcing supports of the Saffaron Revolution and call for more actions against the Military Regime in Burma.
