Hostile reception for uranium train in Gronau

No more secrecy. When a train carrying uranium hexafluoride (UF6) arrived about 1 p.m. on 16 November in Gronau from Pierrelatte in France, two actions took place at the railway station and near the uranium enrichment plant.
Police in Gronau were massed at the plant and took down the ID details of six people when the train rolled into the grounds of the plant at 1.30 pm.

This is the first success in completely tracking a UF6 transport from France to Gronau.

On Wednesday actions took place along the route among others in Bonn, Düsseldorf, Waltrop and Lünen – great stuff that can be built on.

Die UF6 transports from the Rhone Valley in southern France supply the only German uranium enrichment plant, due for large-scale enlargement.

Previously they happened in total secrecy, but in recent months the regional, supra-regional and international cooperation of anti-nuclear initiatives was expanded to the extent that despite the Gorleben stress (see  http://germany.indymedia.org/2006/11/161877.shtml) there was still enough power left to start the new week straight off with a success.

The train set out on Tuesday from Pierrelatte, crossed the border at 11 near Perl-Apach (Moselle Valley) on Wednesday, passed through Trier around 12:35, continuing via Koblenz through the Rhineland and the Ruhr District.

On Thursday morning the train took the route Hamm-Lünen-Dülmen-Coesfeld-Ahaus to Gronau.

In contrast to previous transports, this time all seven freight cars were covered by thick tarpaulins so that only the small radioactivity symbols on the cars indicated the cargo.

The operator of the uranium enrichment plant, Urenco, which in Germany involves the electricity giants RWE and E.ON, had actually reserved the Thursday for themselves for a counter attack after their public relations disaster about nuclear waste transports to Russia and had invited media.

Instead, following the blockade ten days ago, there were again demonstrators standing outside the door starting the next anti-transport campaign – tough luck.

In the past two weeks the regional anti-nuclear activists together with our French, Dutch and Russian friends have succeeded in setting new markers in the struggle for immediate exit from atomic industry.

Where the nuclear Mafia thinks and acts internationally we must also counter with international resistance. We will grow that in future.

More information on uranium transports, the enrichment plant and Urenco is available at www.urantransport.de, www.mega-waltrop.de, www.sofa-ms.de.

Stop uranium transports – shut down the uranium enrichment plant immediately!
