Castor transport to Gorleben starts 10 Nov

The Lüchow Dannenberg Citizens Environment Initiative (BI) has information that this year's Castor transport of nuclear waste to Gorleben will be brought forward a day.

Instead of 11 November the 12 highly radioactive waste caskets from the French plutonium factory in La Hague are to start their run already on 10 November.
According to the BI, the Germans and French argued about the date.
Whereas German Railways (DB) wanted the train to roll out of the loading station of Valognes on 10 November, the French were strictly opposed because of increased railway traffic ahead of a national holiday on 11 November.
"We’re in possession of the timetable,” says the spokesman of the BI. “According to that the radiating freight is to start the trip from Valognes at 7.47 p.m. on 10 November and at 2.32 p.m. the next day is to reach the border railway station Lauterbourg to exchange personnel."
Demonstrations have been announced ahead of the transport to resist Gorleben being turned into a nuclear toilet.
In the town of Uelzen, which lies on the rail route, a demonstration with a rally will take place at the Hammersteinplatz on 28 October from 11 a.m.
For 4 November the BI is organising a bus to a demonstration at 1 p.m. at the Brunsbüttel atomic power station, which has hit the headlines because it has an emergency power system similar to the one that failed recently at the Forsmark nuke in Sweden, almost causing a meltdown. Nominations for the bus trip can be made to telephone 05841-4684.
At the same time as the Brunsbüttel protest, the south German anti-Castor demonstration will take place at the nuke town of Biblis, near Mannheim.
"The accident-prone reactors must be switched off immediately and the nuclear waste disposal crisis must not be worsened by more waste production," the BI spokesman summarises the demands.

Castortransporttermin vorgezogen

Local preparations, actions in Bremen

Diet Simon 24.10.2006 - 08:06
A group called Göhrde aktiv! reports that preparations for the transport are well under way. Police are bringing in containers as housing to replace those burnt down last year. People in the Resistance are making space in rooms and barns for guests.

In the “Resistance Nest Metzingen” the symbols of the anti-nuclear activists dominate the public space. Even though police keep trying to destroy placards and signs they can’t keep up with the varied and practical ideas of the local rebels.

As in previous years, there will be a “barn camp” in Metzingen. The contact point for dry sleeping places, supplies and information and social centre is planned to be ready on Thursday 9 November. Organisers call for early arrivals, i.e. from Friday on.

Mobilisation in the city of Bremen is already massive.
More than 2,000 placards are up at the most beautiful spots in the city and surrounds, and thousands of leaflets have been handed out and placed.
In the night of 15 and 16 September activists beautified town entrance signs in the Bremen surrounds. 180 signs read “Gorleben is everywhere – we’re going to resist”.
On Wednesday morning female and male activists climbed up two lantern masts and hung a large banner between them on a busy roads saying “Stop Castor – Atomic power means death, resistance means life – For the immediate closure of all atomic installations worldwide”. It took three quarters of an hour until police noticed what was going on and turned up with several vehicles. They quickly removed the banner. But many people had by then been made aware of the coming waste transport.
On Thursday afternoon two activists again managed to put up a large banner with a similar message across another main road in the city centre. Lots of good music played from a loudspeaker van while activists handed flyers to passers-by.
The second action achieved a bigger response although police were there faster and the road was closed off for a while.
On Saturday activists joined a local market procession to distribute flyers and buttons to thousands of spectators until cops ordered them to move on.
We call on everyone to take part in the resistance to the Castor transport from 11 to 14 November 2006.
The kickoff demo is on Saturday 11 November at 1 p.m. in Gorleben.

On Friday 10 November a demonstration will take place in Bremen. A march will set off at 12.05 pm from the Bahnhofsvorplatz, a rally will take place from 3 p.m. on the Marktplatz.
