It stopped traffic as it weaved its way through the city to the Liberal Party state offices in Exhibition Street.
Organiser Kim Bullimore says the riots in Sydney have shown that political leaders lack the will to combat racism.
"What we need is some leadership ... actually take a stand," she said.
"I'm here today because I think that Muslim and Arab people should be welcome in our country," one protester said.
Another said: "These riots have happened in Sydney due to tension that's been building up for a long time.
"We don't believe in a divided Australia."
Police guarded the entrance to the Liberal Party offices while the protest continued.
A 26-year-old Tasmanian woman was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer and possessing drugs.

was auf der demo so gefordert und gesagt wurde laesst auch an nicht wenigen punkten daran zweifeln, dass an diesem nationalistischen gewaesch irgendwas "links" ist.
in deutschland wuerde es aber wahrscheinlich aehnlich aussehen, wenn 700 linksdeutsche versuchen rassismus zu thematisieren.
die australische linke ist einfach tot und zersplittert. die groesste "linke" organisation (socialist alternative) hat auf dem ganzen kontinent etwa 300-400 mitglieder.

Thousands of people packed the Bourke Street mall on Friday to demonstrate against racism in response to the recent attacks in Cronulla. Speakers drew attention to sources of racism in our society, including John Howard's speech during the Tampa incident where he proclaimed "We decide who comes into this country and the circumstances in which they come". The lively crowd migrated on to the Liberal HQ to target the Liberal Party as a major source of inciting racism in society via its government propaganda. A further anti-racism event will be held this Sunday with a Love, Peace and Unity rally followed by a picnic in the Treasury Gardens. [Full Story]
