Artikel dazu:
"BEIJING, China (AP) -- Residents of a southern Chinese village near Hong Kong where police opened fire on demonstrators described a tense standoff in the area on Saturday with thousands of armed troops patrolling the perimeter and blocking anyone from leaving."

"wir lassen uns eure Gewalt nicht aufdrängen"

gefunden 13.12.2005 - 15:36

Stop the WTO

Pepper spray, big screens + the grand opening

James Arvanitakis 13.12.2005 - 23:01
Hi everyone...

Well, by the time you get this, you would have read that there was a bit of conflict between 'anti-globalisation protesters' and police... but more on that later...

It was another fascinating day here in Hong Kong... one of the most interesting things was walking past massive screens in downtown Hong Kong (about 10 metres by 10 metres) with images of race riots in Australia... When John Howard tells you that this is not harming Australia's image internationally, it confirms what we have always known about him... the man is an idiot!

Sorry about that, a little sidetracked...

The WTO formally openned today... at the openning ceremony, about 200 NGO delegates were allowed in. But get this, they had to line up from 9am to get the tickets... first in, first served. As I am not registered to enter, I can only give the following report second hand... apparently about 40 people from the Our World is Not for Sale Network stood up during Pascal Lamy's speech and heckled him... the little man was a little thrown... (I use this term in stature not size...)... they then proceeded to the stage and began to yell at him. This went on for 15 minutes before they were ejected. Despite threats, they did not have their NGO status taken away...

Apparently Pascal looked a little stunned... he just stared. I think that he must have thought they were celebraties wanting to meet him... the cockroach limps on...

On the outside, some 5,000 people marched in the rally... there was at least 1,500 Korean farmers. I tell you, I love those guys. They all had the same uniform, knew all the same songs and even had their hand clapping patterns down... it was amazing. On a serious note, the many chants and songs that they followed were truly moving...

I was lucky enough to meet some Indian farmers who are here to protest the commodification of rice. They were inspiring...

The rally was amazing. It was incredibly energetic and powerful. There street was lined with thousands of people watching. A friend who works in a merchant bank here told me that much of the conversation around town is that

a) we do not look violent (go figure)
b) people are enjoyng the protests because they get to have the day off and work from home (nice) and
c) unlike our Asian counter-partsd, western protesters have no fashion sense (this last line was my friend's observation who does not want to be named. I tried to explain that it was those crazy European's who dress badly but she merely looked me up and down)

The end of the march took us to a container terminal were we chanted, danced and mingled. It was kind of like being at a Christmas party except we were surrounded by police and Korean farmers.

At one point about 100 Korean farmers stripped down to their undies, put big bright life jackets around their necks and jumped in the harbour. They then began swimming - actually floating... or bobbing up and down - towards the convention centre where the WTO is meeting. Now that was a cool sight... we all just stared at this sight... event the police did not know how to deal with it. After a while they were fished out of the water...

(Oh my god, the gammers have just started up again... )

Then a bunch of Koreans approached the 10 deep police line and started shoving them backwards... it was aggressive but not violent if you know what I mean. They actually pushed them back about 10 metres... eased back and then started again. It was at this point that massive amounts of pepper spray was released. I was with a organisation called Women's Agenda for Change - about 20 metres behind this action - when the spray flew backwards... after getting a mouthful, we decided to disperse quietly... I know that you would be worried about me, but apart from a bit of a sore throat, all is fine!

(Side issue... imagine the response of the govt if anything like the violence in Cronulla was taking place at a anti-globalisation protest)

Just to finish off, I went to see Joseph Stiglitz speak... I like the guy, but seriously, does he have to pluh his new book every 10 seconds... that is not the point, the point was that Big-Jo presented figures that showed that since the WTO kicked off about 10 years ago, 70% of economic gains have been directed towards the wealthiest nations, while 49 of the poorest nations are worse off!

Also, Tonga will join the WTO tomorrow and become the most liberalised economy in the world! Maximum tariffs will be 20%... compare that to the 350% subsidies that the US gives to some of the large agri-farms!

OK... this place is getting to me and I have just met an Italian I have not seen for about 4 years, so I am off...

In the meantime, watch out for pepper spray, bears and cockroaches

Love, j
