Protests against new labour laws in Germany
The protests addressed a new law introduced on January 1st 2005, merging unemployment and social welfare benefits. The new Unemployment Benefit II (ALG II) is likely to spell poverty for a large amount of job seekers, especially in Eastern Germany whre unemployment rates are continuously soaring high.
In Summer 2004, a sudden and massive protest against the so-called labour market reforms surprised the country. Thousands took to the streets, simultaneously on Monday evenings, in more than 200 cities in Eastern and Western Germany. The protests continued regularly every Monday, reduced to a much smaller scale in Autumn but still going on in January 2005.
