Metro to hype genetically manipulated foods
From the spring of 2004 the grocery trading company METRO (Kaufhof, Real, Extra supermarkets) plans to sneak genetic technology into our food. Together with Bayer CropScience and Monsanto, the world?s biggest suppliers of genetically manipulated food plants, as well as two marketing agencies Metro wants to make their genetic food attractive to us. Their aim with this pro genetic technology campaign is to counteract the duty to declare genetically changed foodstuffs, which goes into force on 1 April 2004.
Monsanto delivers 91% of the genetically manipulated plants grown worldwide. The company suffers from lacking acceptance of gene-food. Because of the large-scale rejection by consumers, the European store chains and food producers have so far by and large eschewed ingredients from genetically changed plants. Because many people don?t want genetically modified foodstuffs, activists want to help Metro to decide against genetic technology in food and to protest against the assertion campaign funded by the genetic technology corporations.
Lidl is the first big grocery discounter to pledge to Greenpeace that even after the introduction of the new marking regulations in April 2004 only foods without genetic technology will be offered. In response to a follow-up question, Lidl made a clear statement of its position. After almost all well-known food producers have committed to this standard, the pressure on Metro is growing. The trading company is the only one actively pursuing the introduction of genetically changed foods.
The large-scale European rejection (70% of the population) of genetic technology in food is especially a thorn in the side of the corporations in the USA. Through the World Trade Organisation the USA is trying to put pressure on the EU states. In mid-May 2003 the USA filed a complaint with the WTO against the de facto moratorium of the EU on genetic technology. The suit argues that the moratorium is not scientifically based and restricts the exports of American farmers to Europe.
A successful campaign against GM foods was waged in Great Britain. In July 1998 genetiX snowball began tearing up genetically manipulated plants on a Monsanto trial field. They were reflecting the opinion of about 77% of the population who reject GM food (figures are similar in our country). Like a snowball, actions and protests continued in supermarkets and turned into a public debate.
The Metro profile:
Part of the Metro group are the supermarkets Real, Extra and Kaufhof as well as the Metro wholesale market for self-employed (cash and carry); also the do-it-yourself Baumarkt Praktiker and the electronics supermarket Saturn. In the grocery sections of the supermarket chains named Metro offers its own brands like "Tip", "à la Carte", "Grafenland", "Danish Fantasy" and "Four Seasons". These products are produced exclusively for Metro.
Based in Düsseldorf, the Metro enterprise is the biggest German trader by total turnover. Worldwide the corporation turns over ?51 billion annually. In Europe Metro is in second place, worldwide it?s third after WalMart und Carrefour.

Genetically engineered ingredients, such as corn and soy, are currently in 60-70% of the food on grocery store shelves, such as cereal, soup, tortilla chips, infant formula and soda. Amazingly, NONE of the genetically engineered foods on the market have been adequately tested for effects on human health or the environment or labeled by the FDA, EPA or USDA. As a result, we have become the subjects of a large-scale experiment on our health and our environment by genetic engineering companies such as Monsanto?the makers of Agent Orange and DDT.
Don't let them do it in the EU!!

Hintergrund der gesamten GVO-Politik ist die neoliberale Politik, zu welcher sich auch Deutschland verpflichtet hat. Mit der Europäischen Union ist das auch für Deutschland bei der WTO verhandelnde Gremium die demokratisch nicht legitimierte EU-Kommission. Sie ist es auch, welche das GVO-Zeugs mit Gewalt durchdrückt. Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Parlament in Deutschland sind deshalb bereits aufgehoben. Für die Menschen ist die WTO mit ihren Beschlüsse sowie so ?uninteressant?, da demokratisch nicht legitimiert und reine Institution der wirtschaftlich Mächtigen.
Was können wir tun?
1.Die Argumentation der USA umkehren. Hier wird einfach in bushistischer Manier behauptet, dass das Zeug unschädlich wäre. Genügend Studien (auch in den USA) belegen das Gegenteil. Es kann mit der Zeit zu einer GVO-Verseuchung kommen, die Natur und Menschen angreift und nicht umkehrbar ist. Durch die Kennzeichnungsfreiheit und Genehmigung bei Zusatzstoffen, sind bereits jetzt 70 Prozent der Lebensmittel mit GVO-Zeugs in Berührung gekommen. Bei Zulassung des Anbaus ist ein ökologischer Anbau nicht mehr möglich (aufgrund der Übertragung über große Strecken).
2.In möglichst breiter Aufklärung, sollte auch immer klar gestellt werden, dass Metro unsere Gesundheit gefährdet und die EU dies zulässt. Gut, wären auch Klagen gegen die Metro, die EU-Beschlüsse und gegen alle Politiker, die das unterstützen. Damit würde auch die neoliberale Politik problematisiert und der Zustand bzw. die gewaltsame Auflösung demokratischer Strukturen ins Bewusstsein gerufen. Dass übrigens statt Demokratie ein Brüssler ?Absolutismus? (Angela Klein von attac) die Entwicklung mehr und mehr bestimmt, werden die Menschen noch an vielen Punkten direkt zu spüren bekommen.
3.Zum totalen Boykott sämtlicher Metro-Geschäfte aufrufen und dort nicht mehr einkaufen.
