Appeal for anti-nuke litigation costs

People living near the Brunsbüttel nuclear power station in north Germany plan legal action against spent fuel being stored there. They’re appealing for donations to help with the costs.

Brunsbüttel lies near the North Sea estuary of the Elbe River, 90 kilometres northwest of Hamburg, Germany’s second city with 1.7 million people. It’s one of 18 nukes left in operation after one even closer to Hamburg, 60 km away at Stade, was recently switched off.

Anke Dreckmann ( Dreckmann@t-online.de) writes on behalf of the would-be plaintiffs:
“Appeal for donations to support litigation against the storage of spent fuel elements

On 28 November 2003 the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS, Federal Office for Radiation Protection,  http://www.bfs.de/bfs?setlang=en) issued the license for interim storage of spent fuel elements at the location of the nuclear power station. People affected by this want to litigate against this permit, including for the following reasons:

· Terrorist attacks have been reality since 11.9.2001. To secure seaports $ 1.3 billion are being spent worldwide, 87 million euros in Germany, but not a cent on securing nuclear power stations.
· Aircraft are being built bigger and will contain more kerosene than now. A study on the consequences of a plane crash onto an interim nuxclear storage is being kept under lock an d key by the federal government.
· There is no long-term experience with CASTOR caskets as storage containers. The Castor test of the Bundesamt für Materialprüfung (Federal Office for Material Testing) that is cited is 25 years old. The Castir caskets have changed.
· The search for a final repository by a commission set up by the federal government has failed, there is no final repository anywhere in the world.

We do not want to expose ourselves to this danger. If the money comes together by the time we have to file the case in January 2004, we will go ahead with the suit. If not, we will return the money or pass it on to the initiative who plan the same kind of action in regard to the Krümmel nuclear power station.

(Please write on your transfer slip, if returned, where to?)
