SENIOR Government figures have admitted that hardly anyone trusts politicians anymore.
In a documentary to be broadcast today, serving and former Cabinet ministers warn public cynicism is at an all-time high - and still rising.
The BBC2 programme, Trust Me, I'm A Politician, also reveals that some MPs are embarrassed about admitting what they do for a living.
Presenter Michael Cockerell says: "The British public is more mistrustful of politicians than ever."
Cabinet minister Clare Short says the collapse in trust could mean the public reject politics and stop voting.
She blames New Labour's spin tactics and forcing Labour MPs to become on-message clones. She says: "It created distrust in the public."
And Tory MP Ken Clarke adds: "Politics, political parties are quite out of fashion and there's a positive hostility sometimes to voting for them."
The documentary covers sleaze in the Major years to cash-for-favours scandals since Labour came to power.
Some admit they are ashamed of their careers. Tory Nicholas Soames says: "Some of my colleagues think it's now got so bad that you have to sort of pretend you're not a politician."
In the film, Ms Short and a host of MPs say they would never use the phrase "Trust me, I'm a politician".
