On international diplomatic floors the German democratic/green government at the moment plays the role of "angel of peace". Nevertheless the german peace movement is protesting against its own government in the streets. Arguments of the peace movement are the following:

1. the democratic/green coalition during the last years has proved that it does indeed lead international wars. The "No" to an Iraq-war is not a definite "No" to war in general. Rather this war against Iraq does not fit with the current interests of Germany.

2. German interests in the golf-region differ to those of the US. Trade between Germany and Iraq is quite pronounced and a war would endanger it. In the same context the German government is very much afraid of the US taking over strategic control over the golf-region via a war and driving Germany out of their current favorable position.

3. Military capacity of the german army is almost fully occupied with its deployments in Afghanistan, Mazedonia, Kosovo, the Horn of Africa and Kuwait. That's why Germany cannot start ANOTHER war.

4. Even without direct participation the preparations for this war are taking place also in Germany: huge parts of the war materials are transported into the golf-region via german airports, the protection of US-barracks by the german army enables the withdrawal of 60.000 US-soldiers from Germany into the golf-region, and the deployment of investigation-aircrafts type "Awacs" is only possible with the support of german engineers and soldiers.

Therefore the positions of the german peace movement and the german government are not compatible.
