Lots of information about the background of the conference and the current situation:

Anti-war protests vs. German governmentIn the diplomatic international public the German democratic/green government plays the role of an "angel of peace" this times. But the German peace movement is demonstrating against its own government in the streets. Arguments of the peace movement are the following:

NATO-"Security Conference" - it's getting wild!:

Annually a high ranking-conference of war mongers takes place in Munich in February. In camouflage as “security conference” representatives of the military, economic and political elite vote for their hegemony strategies. But like already last year this summit in Munich will be accompanied by actions of protest and resistance. Since a few months it was mobilized against the world war-elite internationally with the slogan "Smash NATO".

One year ago, there were thousands of people demonstrating in the streets, despite Verbot of all forms of protest against the “security conference”. This year mayer of Munich Christian Ude decided for a “strategie of convergence”. If he wouldn’t have to welcome the world war-elite in the city hall, he would love to participate in the protests himself. Of course only in the democratic and peaceful groups. The days in Munich will show if the alliance is successful in fending off the attempt of splitting the movement. Up to now however we think: “We are not willing to accept a dictation of the way we want to perform our protests”.

The strange change of Munich's mayor Christian Ude:
Horst Teltschik, the organizor of the "Conference for Security-Policy in Munich" - this is the official name of the conference - is talking about a "peace-conference", the opponents are talking about the "meeting of the war-elite of the world". The "Alliance against the NATO Security Conference", which already organized the protests of last year together with ATTAC and the Peace-Alliance Munich, is stirring action against the conference, which will take place from 7th till 9th February in the "Hotel Bayerischer Hof" in the city center of Munich for the 39th time. Since a few weeks they are joined by the alliance for the protection of children Munich, the Protestant Church and parts of trade unions. The main point is that the mayor of Munich, Christian Ude declared during the SPD-meeting (social democratic party) on 6th January, that he also wanted to join the demonstrations. Since then there are hard discussions between CSU (christian social union), the police of Munich, the organizers of the NATO Security-Conference about the former chancellor advisor Horst Teltschik, the SPD and the Green Party, who would defend their rhetorics of "NO war in Iraq" ever helpless while mayor Christian Ude will be at the official champagne welcome together with the participants of the NATO Security-Conference...

Rumsfeld comes to Munich!!! - countdown NATO-security conference:
There is much chitchat in Munich these days, but most of it is nonsense. One week before the NATO-security conference starts the nerves of politicians, the Church as well as the peace movement are bare. Also media like the newspaper "Süddeutsche Zeitung" (SZ) begin to write into existance the (probably) longed riots.
"The appearence of US-defense minister Donald Rumsfeld mobilizes the opponents of the military meeting" (SZ 28th Jan. 03) and therefore the police expects riots. It was not said where the newspaper got the info, but the police got "visual intructions in Switzerland". More exactly in Davos, where "the leaders of the deployment crew of the police department Munich sit on the grandstand" and observed "globalisation-opponents who threw stones". The "grandstand" was in Landquart, not in Davos and it was disguised as a Bavarian water cannon.

(...)The collective Schizophrenia

It seems as if a collective schizophrenia is spreading in Munich - as a reflection of the political landscape in Germany. Because (almost) everybody is against an Iraq war. Munich's cardinal Wetter demands a "mobilisation for peace", attac calls for a "tour of peace", and mayor Ude thinks a war was "not acceptable in human-rights and moral means". Only the christian-social party (CSU) of Munich is at odds with itself. ...

Mayor of Munich to receive a parad

Mayor Ude is rallying for a march for the "German Way of Peace" and against "naive anti-war fundamentalism"
Last year, the lords of the city hall defined the demonstration against the Nato Security Conference as a disturbance of public order, and banned it. Accordingly, the activists were rounded up in the already traditional "Munich kettle", arrested, and criminalised. Today in 2003, all of this does not seem to be valid anymore. High Mayor Ude considers a ban not only unnecessary, but even thinks there are good reasons to allow the demonstrations.

News (?) from the Bavarian "poison kitchen"

Translation of "Neues (?) aus der bayerischen "Giftküche"!
Similarly to last year - there had been talk ofabout 3,000 "ready-for-violence chaotics" thatwanted to "de-glass" Munich -, the "poison kitchen" of the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior is bubbling hot again.

Arrest because of a call for desertation!
The biggest provocation so far from the side of the state apparatus happened after thedemonstration on the Marienplatz. Thousands had previously vigorously applauded thespeech by Tobias Pflueger from the Information Centre Militarisation in Tuebingen. The reason was his call to the soldiers of the German army that are stationed e.g. inKuwait to desert, at the same time this was the reason for the police to arrest himafter his talk. - We protest vehemently against Tobias´ arrest and demand hisimmediate release! The Munich police directorate obviously does not know themilitary legislation, which explicitly declares refusal in case of an offensive war notonly a right but a duty!

Summary of the happenings in Munich - Friday
Friday the protests against the NATO security conference began with actions of the pink-and-silver group in the inner city of Munich, where the first few activists were arrested. Subsequently the first rally on Marienplatz at 5 p.m.. Approximately 2000 - 3000 activists were present. The welcome-celebration of the city of Munich and the participants of the security conference, the cause for the rally, was relocated from the city hall to the hotel "Bayerischer Hof" rapidly.

Summary of the happenings on Saturday

After everybody having recovered from the shock of the convergence centre being stormed by police (with 22 activists still being hold), saturday morning 10 am a peace-march of aprox. 5000 unionists, social democrats and church members, preceded by town mayor Christian Ude, took place.

A second march of aprox. up to 20.000 , organised by the anti-nato-alliance Munich and joined by many participants of the first march later, formed at noon under heavy snow falls. This lead to police forces and by-standers being bombed (and "shooting" back) by snow balls all along the way, luckily without major casualties. This march extended the call for peace to a harsh critic of NATO and the german government's policies around a pending Iraq war. Apart from some provocative police pressure on the head end of the march and a minor clash between protestors and police about where the march was going to end, it all happened in good humor and powerful form, music and a lovely pink-silver bloc rallying, as far as I know the first one in this town.
At about 4 pm the 22 arrested of the night before were released.
