Antigovernment protests and strikes on the rise in Iran
- Antigovernment protests and strikes on the rise in Iran
Despite growing repression and clampdown by the mullahs' regime, antigovernment
protests and strikes continue to rise in various towns and cities. On Tuesday evening, October 22, an attack by suppressive security agents to arrest
students celebrating a religious feast at the Open University in the southeastern city of Iranshahr was repulsed by students and lecturers, who put up a fierce resistance and finally pushed back the suppressive agents.

Last week in Tehran, suppressive agents of the special anti-riot units severely beat up protesting workers at Shadanpour Shoe Factory. The security forces, aided by anti-riot units, surrounded the workers who had gathered outside the factory and
forced them into the factory courtyard, beating them with truncheons. As workers were leaving the factory for their homes, the special units' agents ambushed them at
Shir-Pak Square (near the factory) and beat them once again and took them away from the scene by bus. The workers were badly beaten up while in custody. The scars of their torture are still visible on their bodies. The intelligence department of the security forces also summoned 16 workers from Shadanpour factory and warned them that if protest moves were repeated, they would be severely punished.
The factory has been shut down and its 450 worker force have been laid off.
In recent days, close to a thousand bakers in Tehran have been demonstrating in front of the Bakers' Union everyday in protest against intolerable pressures imposed on them by the government. Many bakers are being summoned to courts and sentenced to prison terms or heavy fines, while the government has forced many bakeries to shut down. Bakers say they cannot afford to pay the heavy taxes imposed on them by the government.
There have been a number of student protests in various towns and cities in recent days, including student protests in Zabol University, Open University of Tehran, Gilan University and Teachers Training College in Tehran.
