Solidarity action with Yorck 59 in Malta
Moviment Graffitti today is uniting with various social movments and civil society organisations to place pressure on the German government and authorities not to evict Yorck 59. Moviment Graffitti presented a letter of complain to the German embassy in Sliema (Malta) and blocked the entrence of the embassy for a hour.
Yorck 59 is a progressive social centre operating in the heart of Berlin. Which homes various Non Governmental Organisations and individuals. Amongst them one finds, anti racism initiatives, projects and facilities to help immigrants and also the provision of public space for arts and culture. Yorck 59 also offers housing to people in financial need. The Yorck 59 project is highly beneficial to the Berlin community since it helps reduce the racist sentiments that presently are on the increase in Germany.
Moviment Graffitti is concerned that world wide space for progressive and autonomous project is increasingly being suppressed by authorities and the business community. As a result with reference to the present threat to the Yorck 59 project Moviment Graffitti is appealing to the German government to help these kinds of initiatives and not to evict Yorck 59.
Moviment Graffitti would also remaind the public that these speculations are also happening in Malta. A case in point are the proposed car park at Qui-Si-Sana in the heart of a residential area and near the shore. Qui-Si-Sana is one of the few last remaining public space in Sliema. Another case is the proposal of the construction of 240 garages over three and four storeys underlying the existing playing field in John Borg Street. Where a number of mature trees 40 years old will have to be removed, doing away with yet another lung in the overly congested Birkirkara area.
